Lotus 72 made its debut at the Spanish GP, 19 April 1970, the second World Championship race that year. Its last race came 5 years, 5 months and 21 days later. This makes Lotus 72’s career the longest in modern Formula 1. This is intended to be the full statistics of its life. Race debuts of each particular chassis are typed in British Racing Green. Total points in brackets represent points counted towards the Constructors World Championship since only one car - the best placed - per manufacturer in each race was awarded points.

* - that car, in what is a very special form, with coolers faired-in behind the front wheels, cut-down type 72 nosecone and 72 rear-end sheltering beneath a 76 airbox is still codenamed JPS10 in the history books. On Friday, Peterson had a shunt (probably due to a rear wheel broking) with 72/8 at Wippermann, damaging her severely. Then, overnight, the team's mechanics assembled the "special" for Ronnie to race, using JPS10's tub, radiators and front suspension, mated to the 72's engine and rear suspension set. The three points earned with this car have not been taken into type 72 points’ account but she is worth mentioning as a ’half-72’.
